Our Cornish Clay.
Cornish clay isn’t just a material; it’s a piece of Cornwall’s heritage, steeped in centuries of craftsmanship and tradition. Mined from the St Agnes Beacon, our clay comes from one of the most iconic and picturesque regions of Cornwall, known for its rich geological history and natural beauty.
The Doble family, stewards of the Doble's Clay Pit for generations, have carefully extracted this exceptional clay, passing down their knowledge, techniques, and commitment to quality over time. Today, this family tradition continues, ensuring that every batch of clay retains the care and expertise that have made it a staple for potters throughout Cornwall and beyond.
The St Agnes Beacon, with its dramatic views over the Atlantic, offers more than just breathtaking scenery – it’s a place that has long been associated with the extraction of materials used in high-quality pottery. The clay from this area is prized for its smooth texture, natural warmth, and versatility, making it the perfect medium for creating hand-thrown pottery that is not only durable but also beautiful.
This very same Cornish clay has been used by Leach Pottery, one of the world’s most respected pottery studios, founded by Bernard Leach in the early 20th century. Leach Pottery revolutionised studio pottery, blending traditional Eastern techniques with Western sensibilities. Using the same clay ensures that every piece we create carries on this proud legacy, linking our modern creations to a long-standing tradition of excellence.
When you choose our pottery, you’re not just purchasing an item; you’re bringing a piece of Cornwall’s rugged landscape and its artisanal history into your home. Each hand-thrown piece carries with it the spirit of the place from which it came, with the warmth and texture of the Cornish clay making every item unique.
Sustainability
In addition to its rich history, Cornish clay is an environmentally sustainable material. By using locally sourced clay from the Doble family’s clay pit, we’re not only supporting small, family-run businesses but also minimising the environmental impact of shipping materials from far-flung places. This commitment to sustainability is reflected throughout our process, from sourcing raw materials to the final piece.
Once you’ve enjoyed your pottery, it doesn’t just have to sit on your shelf. We encourage repurposing the containers, adding another layer to our sustainable approach. Whether you use our mugs for your morning coffee, our candle containers as a stylish vase, or our bowls for serving your favourite meals, each item is designed to have a second life.
Our handcrafted pottery serves as a reminder that quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability are intertwined. With each piece, you’re helping to support not only the local Cornwall community but also sustainable practices that ensure a future where artistry, nature, and tradition coexist.
By choosing Cornish clay pottery, you’re investing in a product that that celebrates tradition, craftsmanship, and a sustainable future.
